The Mesopotamian civilization development began when farming villages moved into more complex societies. Civilizations include cities, organized government, art, religion, class divisions, and a writing system. The first civilizations arose around river valleys because the farming conditions were better there which made feeding larger numbers of people easier. The earliest known civilization rose in what is now southern Iraq. The area was called Mesopotamia.
